‘Interior Perceptions’ is an exhibition which shows a collection of paintings that pay homage to the tradition of still life painting in Australia. This exhibition brings together three Melbourne based painters with a shared focus on floral and still life encounters. It celebrates the artists’ different ways of working as painters whilst echoing their shared reflection of notions of daily life and the beauty to be found in the mundane. These works evolve as a reverberation of the past two years as we strive to seek beauty in our stagnant environments. In bringing these practices together we aim to highlight the potential for reclaiming still life within the contemporary vernacular.

As part of the exhibition ‘Interior Perceptions’ each artist selected a work by a female Modernist Australian painter to make a response painting to. The selected artists were Margret Preston, Margret Olley and Grace Cossington Smith. This idea came out of the desire to pay homage to the tradition of still life painting in Australia.

This painting responds directly to Grace Cossington Smith’s 1931 painting, ‘Poinsettias’. The framing choice of stacking a modern float frame with an ornate frame speaks to both the past and present concepts represented in this work.

Evolving, oil on canvas, 66 x 51cm.
